Overview In this experience, students learn about the Houston Ship Channel. Then they analyze the positive and negative consequences of this environmental modification. Finally, they imagine what changes may occur in the Texas environment over the next century. Objectives:
People and the natural environment have a big impact on one another. People must adapt to the environment—the climate, natural resources, and terrain—while they also modify it for their own purposes. In this experience, you will learn about the Houston Ship Channel as an example of Texans interacting with the environment.
Objectives:
Imagine what the Texas landscape was like in the 1500s when the first European explorers arrived. Now think of what Texas is like today. What are some ways that Texans have modified the environment?
Students might post examples such as the building of roads, dams, houses, skyscrapers, and oil wells, or clearing of trees for farmland. Students may also mention the impact of the modifications, such as water pollution or air pollution.
