ELAR-Grade-4 Literary Genres Book Review (Fiction)
Students learn the elements of writing a book review. Then, they choose a book to read and explain why they chose it. Next, they read the book and write their book review. Finally, they rate the book and create a new cover for it.

This learning experience is designed for device-enabled classrooms. The teacher guides the lesson, and students use embedded resources, social media skills, and critical thinking skills to actively participate. Overview

In this experience, students learn the elements of writing a book review. Then, they choose a book to read and explain why they chose it. Next, they read the book and write their book review. Finally, they rate the book and create a new cover for it.

Note that there is a complementary experience in the Non-Fiction Texts unit. Either experience can be used multiple times throughout the school year for students to submit a book review via Exploros.

Objectives

  • Choose a fiction book and read it.
  • Write a book review for the book.

Duration

Assign the experience for the duration of the time period that students have from selecting a book to completing reading and writing the book review.


In school, sometimes you will be assigned to write a book review. A book review is an essay about a book you have read. You report on what you liked or disliked about the book. In this experience, you will learn how to write a book review, and then you will write one for a fiction book.

Imagine you have just finished reading a book. It’s a fiction book—a book with a made-up story. And you loved it!


What would you tell your friends about the book to make them want to read it?

Post your answer

Briefly discuss a few interesting student responses. They are likely to offer some valid ideas, such as, “I’d say what the book is about,” and “I’d say why I liked the book.” Tell students that in this experience, they will take those ideas and learn to express them fully in a detailed review of a book.
