Overview In this experience, students learn the elements of writing a book review. Then, they choose a book to read and explain why they chose it. Next, they read the book and write their book review. Finally, they rate the book and create a new cover for it. Note that there is a complementary experience in the Non-Fiction Texts unit. Either experience can be used multiple times throughout the school year for students to submit a book review via Exploros. Objectives Duration
In school, sometimes you will be assigned to write a book review. A book review is an essay about a book you have read. You report on what you liked or disliked about the book. In this experience, you will learn how to write a book review, and then you will write one for a fiction book.

What would you tell your friends about the book to make them want to read it?
Briefly discuss a few interesting student responses. They are likely to offer some valid ideas, such as, “I’d say what the book is about,” and “I’d say why I liked the book.” Tell students that in this experience, they will take those ideas and learn to express them fully in a detailed review of a book.
