Students write an argumentative text. First they choose a topic and then they develop it through the writing process from prewriting, to drafting, to revising and editing. They apply the characteristics and organizational structure of argumentative texts to their own writing.

Overview

In this experience, Students write an argumentative text. First they choose a topic and then they develop it through the writing process from prewriting, to drafting, to revising and editing. They apply the characteristics and organizational structure of argumentative texts to their own writing.

At the end of the experience, students will self-evaluate their work based on a rubric. You may review the rubric with them at any point during this experience.

Objectives

  • Plan and write an argumentative essay, moving through the writing process.
  • Apply argumentative characteristics and organizational structure to an argumentative text.
  • Revise and edit argumentative text.

Duration

One week. You may want students to draft or research information outside of classroom time.


You may often be faced with having to convince others to agree with a position you hold or something you want to do. In this experience, you are going to move through the writing process to create an argumentative text, stating your claim and supporting it with evidence. You will brainstorm, draft, revise, and publish an argumentative text.

In the weeks leading up to a Super Bowl game, there is a lot of talk about the commercials that will be aired. Companies pay about $5 million to broadcast a 30-second commercial. For that price, the commercial better convince the public to buy the product!


What is the most convincing commercial or advertisement you have seen? Describe the commercial and what made it stand out in your mind.



Use student responses to spark a discussion about what makes commercials and advertisements convincing. Student answers may include: vivid language and images, topics they can relate to, strong reasons and evidence.


In this experience, you are going to write an argumentative text to try to convince someone to agree with your opinion.
