Learning Experiences (Lessons) in Foundational Skills Each learning experience takes about 45 minutes to teach in the device-enabled classroom.
Listening and Responding
Students practice active listening to interpret messages. First, they listen to an excerpt of a speech and summarize it and make comments. Then, they listen to a message containing instructions, and they ask relevant clarifying questions. Finally, they practice giving and following clear, multi-step oral instructions.
Dictionary Usage Skills
Students use a dictionary to find meaning, syllabication, pronunciation, word origin, and part of speech of familiar and unfamiliar words. Then, they utilize their new vocabulary in writing. Finally, they research and write a profile of Noah Webster.
Using Context for Meaning
Students learn to use context to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and words with multiple meanings. Then they write some of their own sentences to use context to give meaning.
Building Vocabulary: Greek and Latin Roots
Students expand their knowledge of word roots, prefixes, and suffixes originating in Greek and Latin. They build and decode words using those elements, including identifying multiple words using the same elements. They then utilize their new vocabulary words in expressive writing. Finally, they learn common Latin abbreviations.
