Overview In this experience, students explore the history and society of ancient Egypt during the Old Kingdom. They begin by examining an ancient Egyptian creation story and what it reveals about religious beliefs. Next, they investigate the pyramids and consider what these monuments show about religion, government, labor, and technology. Students then learn about the role and responsibilities of the pharaoh before examining how different social groups contributed to the functioning of Egyptian society. Ancient Egypt’s history is thousands of years long. This experience takes you into the Old Kingdom (c. 2650 B.C.E. to c. 2150 B.C.E.), a period when the kingdom along the Nile River became powerful and built some of ancient Egypt’s most famous monuments.

Religion was an important part of life in ancient Egypt. Ancient Egyptians told stories about gods and goddesses to explain how the world began and how forces in nature were connected. These stories can help us understand some of the beliefs and ideas that shaped ancient Egyptian culture.
