Students are introduced to the concept of globalization. First they infer what the term globalization means. Then they watch a video and read an article to learn about the concept. Next they create a chart of the positive and negative impacts of globalization. Finally they create a poster showing ways that globalization affects their daily lives.

Planet Earth is huge: circumference 40,075.017 km (24,901.461 mi); 126 billion acres of land; eight billion residents living in 195 countries. Planet Earth is small: an email can be delivered across the world in seconds; people can shop in stores in other countries from their own living rooms; people around the world can watch the same broadcast simultaneously. Big or small, the people who dwell on planet Earth have become interconnected in a way known as globalization.

A simple definition of globalization is “an interconnected world.” The concept of globalization is much more complex. It is most often associated with the economy, but there are also social, ecological, cultural, and health aspects to globalization.

Ask students: How might the COVID pandemic be an example of globalization?


Globalization is not new to this century. Name an example of globalization from earlier periods in world history. Hint: Think about key topics you have covered in your history courses.
