Texas History Conservatism and Contemporary Texas Local Government and Public Services
Students learn about local government in Texas. First, they examine the function of counties and research their own county. Then they learn about types of municipalities and forms of city government. Next they read about special districts and give information about their own school district. Finally, they prepare a presentation for a third-grade class about local government in Texas.

In this experience, students learn about local government in Texas. First, they examine the function of counties and research their own county. Students will collaborate in small groups for scene 2 to scene 4.

  • Describe the structure and function of local government at the municipal and county levels.


Do you know that your school is located in both a city and a county? Do you know the difference between cities and counties and how they serve you? Cities and counties are examples of places run by local government. In this experience, you will learn about the function of local government and the services provided.

Local governments such as county and city governments affect people on a day-to-day basis. Local governments provide most of the services that you depend on to live a comfortable and safe life.


List at least one service that your local government provides. How many can you name? To list multiple services, separate them with a comma like this: car, train.

Post your answer

Students may know to list police protection, water and sewer services, education, libraries, fire protection, parks and recreation services. Correct any misconceptions, such as interstate highways, Supreme Court, or national parks.


Divide students into their small groups for the next three scenes. When everyone is ready to continue, unlock the next scene.
