Overview

In this experience, students are introduced briefly to Ancient Greece. They move on to a lengthier exploration of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Reformation throughout Europe. Finally, they analyze what the Renaissance and the Reformation have in common.

This experience has a significant amount of historical information about Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, and Reformation Europe. You may choose to divide the experience over several days. A culminating activity could be to have students create one timeline for all the eras represented in this time period.

One additional activity you might include: The images that are used to depict Ancient Greece, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance in this experience reveal one aspect of the changing view of art in these eras. Have students note that the image for Ancient Greece is a realistic depiction of a human form. Then look at the image for the Middle Ages—the human depiction is flat and includes many religious symbols. Finally, the Renaissance returns to a more realistic visual presentation of a human.
