English Language Arts Grade 5 The Writing Process
Students learn and apply the rules for capitalizing abbreviations, initials, acronyms, and organizations. Then they learn comma usage for compound and complex sentences. Next they learn and apply the rules for using italics or underlining for emphasis and titles and how to punctuate dialogue. Finally, they summarize the rules for a younger audience.

Duration

Writing is one major way to communicate our thoughts and ideas to others. In order to clearly communicate your ideas, you need to make sure you are correctly using capitalization and punctuation. In this experience, you will learn and apply rules for capital letters, commas, italics, and quotation marks.

  • Identify and apply comma usage for compound and complex sentences.

Some students may struggle to come up with a caption. Encourage students to be creative, but they can provide a literal caption if necessary.

  • Punctuation marks are your friends.
  • We always have the last word.
