Learning Experiences (Lessons) in Personal Narrative Each learning experience takes about 45 minutes to teach in the device-enabled classroom.
Making Connections to Text
Students identify and define the various connections that can be made while reading: text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. Then, they identify the connections they are making in assigned texts. Next, they evaluate how these connections help them to better understand what they are reading. Finally, students read a self-selected text and make connections to that text.
Reading Personal Narratives
Students learn the key characteristics of a personal narrative. They read an example of a personal narrative and then analyze how the personality of the author is shown and what changes he undergoes. Finally, they connect to the story by writing a letter to the narrator.
Writing a Personal Narrative
Students apply their knowledge of personal narratives as a genre as they compose their own personal narrative. They move through the writing process as they brainstorm, outline, compose, revise, edit, and publish their personal narratives.
Presenting a Family Story
Students learn and apply the skills for making presentations and active listening. In small groups, each student presents a short, two-minute talk sharing a family story based on an interview they conduct. The other students are active listeners during the presentation, and then they discuss the presentation, generating questions and positive comments. Finally students evaluate their presentation skills.
