Next they study applications of satellite imagery and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and propose layers for a neighborhood map. Finally, students evaluate the function of the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and their impact on society. Objectives
The earliest known maps were drawn on cave walls about 14,000 years ago. They weren’t local or regional maps—they were maps of the stars in the heavens. The oldest known world map was drawn in Babylonia in the fifth century B.C.E. Maps were important to early explorers and traders. The science of making maps is called cartography. In this lesson, you will learn about different types of maps.
Objectives
If you asked your grandparents how they researched the route to a new address, they would likely reply that they used a folded paper street map. Your parents may have used a GPS system built into their car.
