Civics Geography of the United States Northeast United States
Students brainstorm names of cities in the Northeast region. Then they learn about the physical geography of the Northeast region: climate, landforms, resources, and landmarks. Next they learn about the human geography and explain the relationship between the region’s fastest growing careers and its geography. Finally, they prepare a written report about one of the region’s states.

The United States is often divided into five geographic areas. In this experience, you will learn about the Northeast region, which contains the following states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Ask students to describe what they see in the photo. Then ask if any students have seen the Statue of Liberty in person. For students who answer yes, ask them to describe what they felt when they saw it.


Name a major city in the Northeast region.

Sample answers: New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Hartford, Providence.

Ask students if they can name the capital cities of the Northeast states. They are: Hartford, Connecticut; Augusta, Maine; Boston, Massachusetts; Concord, New Hampshire; Trenton, New Jersey; Albany, New York; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Providence, Rhode Island; and Montpelier, Vermont.
