In this experience, students study a map and make predictions about the Gunpowder Empires. They learn about the Ottoman Empire and analyze Greek independence from the empire. Then they learn about the Safavid Empire and examine how a piece of art reflects its culture. Next they learn about the Mughal Empire and explain the source of its great wealth.

You may choose to teach the experience over several class periods to allow time for students to synthesize the information on each empire.

Objectives

  • Identify the Gunpowder Empires.
  • Analyze the impact of the Ottoman Empire.

Many English speakers think that European history is all of world history, but there have been many major empires in the Near East and southern Asia throughout the centuries. Three of the greatest empires—the Ottoman Empire in Turkey, the Safavid Empire in Persia (modern-day Iran), and the Mughal Empire in India—thrived in the early modern period, spreading their cultural influence and political power while Western Europe was still emerging from feudalism. In this lesson you will learn about these three empires.

Objectives

  • Identify the Gunpowder Empires.
  • Analyze the impact of the Ottoman Empire.

Map of the three empires spread across Europe, Africa, and Asia

The Gunpowder Empires

Scholars often call these three empires the gunpowder empires. Study the map and consider the term gunpowder empire.

Now make some predictions about these empires.

Give students time to read and discuss the predictions. You do not need to correct misconceptions at this point. If time allows, return to the predictions before the quiz and have students compare them to what they learned. Typical answers:

  • The empires had military might, based on new technology like cannons and advanced firearms.
  • They had strong central governments that could organize and finance armies. They waged in many wars.
  • They had an extensive trade network, based on location and access to the seas and the Silk Roads.
  • They were Muslim empires.
