The Civil War ended, and the Union won. In 1865, the 13th Amendment ended slavery in the United States. After the war, the country entered a period called Reconstruction. During Reconstruction, people worked to rebuild the South, and formerly enslaved African Americans worked to build new lives as free people. In Texas, people faced important questions about work, education, voting, and equal rights. Reconstruction lasted until 1877, when the federal government removed the last troops from the South. In this lesson, you will learn about some of the changes and challenges Texas faced during Reconstruction. In the next lesson, you will study some of these issues more closely.
