Explain to students that this is a photograph of the spinning jenny invented by James Hargreaves. This machine was used to spin yarn into thread. Before the spinning jenny was invented, yarn was spun into thread one spool at a time. The spinning jenny allowed for nine spools to be spun at the same time, thus increasing the amount of thread that was produced at once.
