Unit Vocabulary


You learned in the last unit that the Republic of Texas had many problems. The most serious problem was the debt. Many Texas citizens wanted to join the United States in order to strengthen Texas. In this unit, you will learn about Texas and statehood, and about the U.S. Civil War.

Objective

  • Learn vocabulary related to early Texas statehood and the Civil War.


The U.S. postage stamp shows the statehood as beginning in 1845. President Polk signed the resolution in December of that year. The formal handoff from the Republic President to the new Texas governor was in February 1846.

Texas gained statehood in 1845.


This lesson builds your vocabulary with words you will use in this unit. The words are:


  • annexation: the act of adding new territory to an existing place
  • civil war: a war between citizens living in the same country
  • confederacy: a form of government in which the states join together for a common purpose, usually without a strong central government
  • expansion: the act of making something bigger
  • home front: the civilians during a war
  • recognize: approve or accept the government of a new nation
  • resolution: a formal statement or decision passed by a legislature
  • secession, to secede: withdrawal from a nation to become independent
  • statehood: the situation of being a state


Statehood is the situation of being a state. When we talk about a state gaining statehood, we mean the year that the state joined the United States.
