In this experience, students learn about the controversy surrounding the use of the Confederate flag by governments in southern states. Then they research and write a position paper defending one side of the controversy and proposing a solution to the problem. Finally, they present their position paper and proposed solution to the class.

While this experience focuses on the use of the Confederate flag in modern culture, you may choose to expand the conversation to additional symbols, for example, sports mascots like Chiefs or Redskins, and the U.S. flag on clothing or decorative items. You can have students research one of these issues and take a stand on these historical symbols and whether their use in modern culture is patriotic or hurtful to some groups.

Note that there is no quiz at the end of this experience.

  • Identify different points of view on social issues.
