Overview

In this experience, students learn about French motivations for colonization in North America and La Salle’s goals in particular. They read about La Salle’s failed attempt to locate the mouth of the Mississippi River and the French settlement near Matagorda Bay known as Fort Saint Louis. They also examine how competition between France and Spain for territory, trade, and influence affected Spanish exploration and settlement in Texas.

Objectives:

  • Discuss why the French wanted to establish colonies in North America
  • Describe why La Salle built a fort in Texas
  • Identify why La Salle’s expedition led to conflicting territorial claims between France and Spain

More than 300 years after a French ship sank off the Texas coast, archaeologists discovered its remains and thousands of objects buried with it. The ship, called La Belle, was part of an expedition led by French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle.

As you watch the video, pay attention to what archaeologists found and what the shipwreck can reveal about the people and goals of La Salle’s expedition.

Watch the video, then answer the question.

What question do you have about this shipwreck? If someone has already posted your question, try to think of a different one.

La Belle was one of four ships in La Salle’s 1684 expedition to establish a French colony near the mouth of the Mississippi River. The expedition missed its intended destination and eventually reached the Texas coast near Matagorda Bay. La Belle later sank there in 1686. Students may have many different questions about the shipwreck, the expedition, and how the discovery of La Belle helps historians understand this period. There is additional reading about La Belle in the student pack.
