Southeast Asia: Government and Economy

Students learn the type of government of each of the countries of Southeast Asia. Then they research and write their own definitions for those types of government. Next, they investigate the economy of the various countries in Southeast Asia including important imports and exports as well as key events or factors in the economy. Finally, students write a news report on a current event in one country’s government or economy.

This learning experience is designed for device-enabled classrooms. Overview:

In this experience, students learn the type of government of each of the countries of Southeast Asia. Then they research and write their own definitions for those types of government. Students will work in small groups in scene 3. Divide them into up to ten groups, so that the groups can cover most of the Southeast Asia countries.

Southeast Asia is made up of eleven countries with varying types of government and economies. In this experience, you will explore how those countries differ and how they are the same in their governments and economies.

As you know, the United States began as a group of colonies that successfully fought to win their independence from the colonizing country. You also know that the founders of this country had to resolve deep disagreements and uncertainties when setting up the government.

What problems do you expect that a Southeast Asian nation, achieving independence from a European colonizer in the 1940s or later decades, might have faced when establishing its government? What solutions do you think they might consider? Write 2–4 complete sentences to respond.

Answers will vary, but likely will include words like democracy, congress, President, king or queen, monarchy, communism, etc. Invite students to state anything they know about how the countries of Southeast Asia organize their governments.
